TAKANINI TRAINING TRACKS

PromingjSt O^vnersi Erime Movers ' In Purchase; L 1 -',

SUBSIDISED BY A.R.C.- AND T.J.G.

(From "Trufti's" Special Auckland Representative.)

It seems to be the general impression that civic by-laws must eventually compel the regular training of racehorses a Way from Ellerslie. ' ' ' • ;

THE band of Auckland owners who" purchased a talock of 36 acres at Takanini for the purpose of providing training- tracks also seem to think along 'similar lines. At the present time most of the horse trainers using Ellerslie have their stables situated either m Auckland city area, One Tree Hill district, or m the Ellerslie Town Board district. Already there is a by-law regarding horse stables m the city, which states that they must not exist, and it is quite probable that the other local bodies will fall into line sooner or later. The A.R.C. is alive to the position, but there seems little doubt that when it is made compulsory for horsetrainers to shift further out from the city area, some arrangement can be arrived at whereby the A.R.C. would secure authority to accommodate racehorses for a limited peripd during its different fixtures. So far as space is concerned, there is an abundance of room left on the outskirts of the cpurse property to erect the necessary boxes. Suitable Land . ■ r "~ * Some time back the A.R.C. discussed the matter of purchasing suitable blocks for providing training tracks m the Papakura and Papatoetoe districts. Nothing, however, came of the undertaking, except that it was decided to- subsidise any suitable tracks formed within a reasonable distance of Ellerslie. _. . ■ And such has really come about, for the A.R.C. has now agreed to subsidise to the extent of £500 a . year the new training tracks being formed m the Takanini district. Takapuna J.C. has also agreed to allocate £300 for the same purpose. In the case of Takapuna, it was found almost impossible (owing to the nature of the ground across the harbor) to form suitable training tracks, and it would seem that so far as the T.J.C. is concened, the .subsidising * £iiiiiii|iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiii(iiiiuiiiiniii

of the Takanini' tracks is the only way out for them. ! In getting off with £300 a year the club is being treated lightly. . One condition laid down with regard to the subsidies of the ' A.R.C. and T.J.C. is that the new training tracks must be constructed and maintained to the entire satisfaction of the A.R.C. officials. '■'.•. " , • i . Three Tracks .In all, there are three training tracks being formed at Takanihl, the main one being a mile and three chains round. This will' bevalmpst a com r plete replica of Treiitham Jir. shape, with two long straights and two equal turns of over eight chains radius. The grass track will be,soft. wide, while there will be two other tracks formed— a grass 25ft and a plough 25ft wide. ; The drainage question \a stated to be satisfactory, with a public drain m the vicinity. The property; is situated right alongside the railway line, on the city side of J. T. Jamieson's private track at Papakura. The formation of the new tracks is already well . forward. Men Interested The sportsmen who interested themselves m proMdlng the property for training purposes are mostly/ prominent owners who expect to reap • no financial benefit from the undertaking, ibeir desire being mainly to , provide lor a future necessity. ' It is generally believed they are quite prepared to hand over their rights to the A.R..C. should the northern racing body find it compulsory to take the place over in' the' future^ ' ■- ■•• One of the most prominent owners connected with the venture is Fred Earl, K.C. Associated with him are such keen racing enthusiasts 1 as Sir James Coates, Messrs. E. W. Alison (jun.), J. C. Gleeson, W. H. Wackrow, W. Scholium, A.- E. T'attley and other prominent sportsmen.
