A Denial
THE CASE OF MICHAEL HYLAND
In a recent issue appeared the report of a case m which Michael Hyland, of Wellington, was proceeded against by his wife m Auckland for arrears alleged to have been due under a maintenance order. While our report of the,, proceedings m Court was absolutely correct, it has been represented to us on behalf of Mr. HylanJ that some of the statements made during the hearing were contrary to fact. Defendant was not present at the hearing — his evidence was taken m Wellington — and lie claims to have had no opportunity of rebuttal. As we do not desire that he should suffer any injustice, we give him the opportunity of contradicting some of the statements to '. hich he takes exception. The statement that defendant was carrying on with another woman is emphatically denied. Mr. Hyland states that at no time has he lived with a woman other than his wife and he challenges anyone to prove otherwise. Another "absolutely incorrect" statement (we are assured) Svas that a man had been sent to prison for twelve months for forging Hyland's name. Defendant knows nothing whatever of such a matter, no one ever forged his name and he had no bank account on Which anyone could draw a cheque m his name. The statement that the parties had not lived together as man and wife since 1913 is also contradicted as (Hyland says) they did . so on occasions for several years after the order was made. _____
