HOW THEY ARE DEALT WITH.
. The recent happenings m the Royal Fancy case have " directed attention to the system of registering horses at present m vogue m Australia. When a horse has raced m other parts of the- world arid comes here to race, the practices-laid down by .the A.J.C. (rule 34) ii that the ani- ' m'al can race under its old name ■with the addition of (N.Z), .for New
Zealand houses, (Am.) for American, and (Eng.) for English. These affixes., become part of the name, and there should be .no. confusion when horses are properly registered Whether the system is the best that can be devised is open to doubt. , But can anyone suggest a better one? It has. been proposed that any overseas horses coming to race here should be given a new name; but if that were done such . "world- famous horses as Gloaming, Biplane, Noctuiform, Violoncello, and so on would have to be re-named, and the resultant confusion would be far worse than any that is caused by the present system. • For instance, if the thoroughbred stallion Violoncello had to have his name changed ; there would be endless confusion m looking up his past performances, as he ia a fair winner m England. . If the present system had been properly^, understood, there would have been- no confusion over the Royal Fancy case, as the/two mares were distinct animals, and the two names were sufficiently differentiated by the addition of (N.Z.) to the name of one of them. Anyhow, as before stated", , can /anyone suggest a better system? — "Sydney Sportsman."
