THE NEW ZEALAND CUP.
Although six weeks off, the big southern hand-leap is being discussed, and quite a 'number of the prospective runners have already revealed form, .which has caused their admirers to sing their praises. Trespass, Admiral Codrington, Muraahi, and Many Kittle have, each won races. \ Of the quartette, Trespass and Admiral Codringtbn have incurred 51b penalties, and this may suggest that their respective owners have no designs on the two mile race, with, these particular animals, as it is only natux-al that, if possible, a. penalty is to be avoided, more especially [when an event is run over s a lengthy course, and minor handicaps are purposely placed on programmes favour owners who wish to give their charges plenty' of public education. The top weight, Koyal Star, is- undergoiu^ a special ■ preparation for the even:, and promises to strip well, as besides a x - uri m the Winter Cup m the beginning of August, he had a couple of runs at Ashburton. Little notice need be taken of his failure to pay a dividend, as th % >3 races competed for were run over courses too short for Royal Star. Marqueteur, who is a very likely runner, had a race m the Marion Handicap, and improved considerably thereby, so that when produced a week later at Wanganui his trainer gave the son of King Mark a fair chance. As Marqueteur races himself into form (and he wants plenty of it) he may not produce his best on- the opening day. Rouen contested the Flying at Marton, and looked well forward, but the son of Bezonian picked up a thorn and m consequence has done little ' since. ■ "Jack' 1 Lowe is giving Insurrection a patient preparation over short courses/ and the son of Kilbroney will possibly strip one of the fittest on the day. Cupidon is doing great work m Australia, and is evidently - better than at any other stage of his career, and should Mason fail to win a good race with Cupidon across the Tasman he will be very hard to dispose of m the New Zealand Qup.Foo Chow, who is nicely handicapped, is a much improved gelding. He is much more forward this year than last, and one has only to rei member his excellent showings • m ' the Auckland and Wanganui Cups 1 (both run over long distances) to favour the chance of the son of Solferino. , Sunart has not had a run m public for twelve months, but Fred Tilley is I giving Tame Fox and Equitable plenty of racing. The last named has been finishing: well m his late races, and Tilley may give the Cup a "shake" with the half-brother to Oratress. Tom Quinlivan's pair, Royal Box 'and Scion, have not appeared m public this season. Royal Box is quoted at an absurd price by the "woolbrokers." In the three- year- old Tressayr Mason holds' a strong second string, and if a runner m preference to CvI pidon would command a strong fol- 7 j lowing. I Tenterfield, Kilgour, Penitent, Bonnie Heather, Omaliu, "Urgency, Eerie, Lady Nassau, Taipairu, Linden and Battle Knight have each raced of late, but their form has been such that one could not favour their chance m a two-mile, race. The lightweight Muraahi gained friends by his win at Wanganui, but may do better m minor Cups.
