- "'"? Among those who enjoyed the festivities of the Poneke Club's annual "smoko" • last week was" Mr G. WillHams, who was the first .Poneke senior team's heaviest forward, and also a member of ihe original Maori team. Speaking of football of other days, he observed that • never ~ih all' his' travels' had he seen a better captain than Sid Nieholls, skipper of the first Ponekeites. The name of this giant of the football past was mentioned many times during the evening, and the pre- ' sident of the club, Dr. A. K. .Newman, M.P., who has preside , at every "smoko" since the club was inaugurated, spoke with affectionate regard for Sid. Poneke players assembled at their annual "smoko" last week and applauded loud and long when B. Algar, the senior skipper/ was awarded ' the trophy donates by the president, Dr, Newman, for the' most useful man m the club. Of the' Tilyards there seem to be many, and each with a. penchant for handling a football accurately. At Poneke' s annual "smoko" last week a sturdy young chap answering to the name of H. Tilyard took charge of a trophy' for the most improved back m the third-grade team. 1 ' The Rugby game has 25,000 players m New Zealand.
