OLD AGE PENSIONS.
Dear "Truth,"— -I was pleased to notice In a recent issue of your paper a few lines In favoF of the. necessity of an increase m the above pensions. The present high cost of living Is a sufficient argument In favor of it, and the reason of my troubling: you,, m this connection is because the discussion of the financial statement is now over, and this matter has not once been referred to. Members are looking after a rise for themselves, but if they do not help the Old Aged Pensioner, they may find that on polling: day retaliation may come. ' A matter m connection with the Old Age Pensions Act, In my opinion, wants amending, yiz^ the amount a pensioner' can earn without affecting 'his pension. I am informed £65 Is the highest amount he can earn without affecting his pension. If a man of 70 or over could earn, say, £2 a Week, why should hfe not be allowed to do bo. I some years ago communicated with Sir Joseph Ward, also with the- member for our district, and although they both agreed that the limit of earning was ridiculous, nothing has been done, however, to alter it. An Old Age Pensioner must not be put into a position to say« enough to pay his funeral expenses; — Tours eta, Dunedln. "OLD CHUM."
