David Nield, a patrlarphial prophet well-known m Wellington and other, parts of the Dominion, has been recently endeavoring to enlighten the Melbournians on Armageddon, the End of the World, the Day of Judgment, and, of course. Eden's Day Line, which latter is David's particular study. On week .days, when m. Wellington, Brother Nield goes round tho factories purveying machine oil, oildag, packing and other requisites for engineers, meanwhile dropping a kihdly word to saints and sinners, and on the Sabbath he holds forth m his little bethel to an earnest .little congregation., who are, no doubt, satisfied that their venerable pastor has discovered the right path to everlasting life and happiness. The ancient Romans dated their years from the building of the. city; the Oreeks, from tholr Olympic games; tho Assyrians, from tho era of Nabonasar; the Mahommedans, from tho Hoglra, or (light of Mnhommed. The French mado a fresh start with their "Revolutionary Calendar" m 1792, which thoy tcrmod "Year Ono of Liberty," but Napoleon returned to the old style In 1805. Most of the old lawgivers of tho various nations tinkered with tho calendar, but the best work was dono by Julius Cmsar, who, m A. 8.C., Inaugurated what was known as tho Julian calendar, which prevailed ln Europe for many centuries, and Is still used ln Russia and Greece.
