COLES' COOL CHEEK.
Joseph Goles, alias Riley, and Timothy Francis Ryan (Mr Tunics) appeared before Mr E. C. Cntten, SJ_., at the Auckland Magistrate's Court, to answer a charge of theft of two silver-mounted brushes, valued at 10s, the property or (Jcorge Richards, from a boarding-bouse m Hoh-son-strect,, Auckland. George Richards, who is a clerk, gave evidende that the brushes were missing. He next saw thefti. m a second-hand dealer's shop. A lel-low-lodger testified t© having seen accused on June 21 m the passage leading to Rich-Kids room. Witness asked Cotes what he wanted. Accused replied, "I am loofc|'ing for two of my mates." Kdwattd Ltodj scy said accused Cole came to his snOtfei er's seeond-hafid dealer's shop and sold the brushes for Is. Accused Coles gave the name of Thomas. Constable Dunnett m giving evidence, said tbat Coles, when arrested, dehied all knowledge of the theft, and gave an assumed name. Coles pleaded guilty, and declared that Ryan ' had nothing whatever to do with the theft. Coles AVas committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Kyan was discharged.
