ELLIOTT ELOPES.

WHO WILL BRING HIM BACK ?

The Police at Fault.

The fact that Alfred Clarence Elliott has. to use an llliterative expression, eloped, does not come as any extraordinary surprise to what is commonly and comically called this "religious rae." Elliott has gone, he has shunted, he has, m short, deliberately cheated the law ofi its dues, and if. ever dues were earned, they were to be expected of A. C. Elliott. The peculiar financial "funny dosserisina" of this champion criminal were published m "Truth," and the police were asked wfcy no steps were being taken to prosecute the "buncosteering" scoundrel with all the vigor of the law, not forgetting that the law lacks vigor and force except when it is the case of some petty theft.. The published report of Elliott's defalcations show that his secured and unsecured creditors are : — • UNSECURED CREDITORS. Following is the list of unsecured creditors as supplied by the bankrupt to Mr Hull:-^- ' £ s. d. James Ames ... ... 370 0 0 Ernest H. Anderson f __ ... 200 0 0 Mrs Anstis ...' ._. ... 250 0 0 A. W. Then, again. "Truth" has to complain that m alleging forgery 'against Elliott, it made ai). - allegation serious and suggestive, an allegation that Elliott, even as a fraudulent bankrupt, would not have brooked. To that charge there was' no response ; no threat . of writ of criminal libel ; not even as our friend, George Goodall, would suggest, an invitation to a secluded spot. Had the police been seized of their" proper responsibilities, Elliott would have been arrested on suspicion and the statement sworn or otherwise of Mr H. Martindale, of the • fifm of Scott and Martinhale would have been prima facie proof that a felony had been committed. Notwithstanding the voluminous proof that could have been forthcoming, the T "*Hce ignored it, and this paper fails to understand to whom the blame is due. For Official Assignee Simpson WE HAVE NO LOVE. . We have before declared him officially unsuitable for his job. The blame, if there is blame to be attached to anybody, must be to the police. Elliott has eloped, or escaped, whichever is the best term. Anyhow, he has gone, and he has forged, thieved, and yictimised generally, and it looks very much as if he will not be brought back unless on the initiative of some victims. This is a scandalous state of affairs surely. Forgery is a penal offence recognised by law as more than a misdemeanor ; it is a crime and the criminal law should be set m operation. It is no use crying . over the matter, Elliott has gone, let the Crown bring him back !
