OBITUARY.
Walter E. Pine.
Poor little ' Wattie Pine, who met his death at Waimate on Thursday week, was a bright-eyed, merry youth, and m time gave fair promise of becoming an . accomplished horseman. He was fifteen years of age, and was! apprenticed to his brother, W. Pine, the well-known trainer. Earlier m 'jthe day he had been successful on^Miss Gal' m the Studholme Stakes and 'm the Harvest Handicap he was leading "on Nancy Stair when that mare unfortunately collided. with a post and unseated heec rider. The poor lad was picked up m an unconscious state, and died on the way. to the hospital. He was 'buried at Oamaru last Saturday*alongside the. remains of his mother, who predeceased him' some time. The little fellow was up m these parts at Christmas time, when he rode. De Witte and Greenleaf to victory at Awapuni, and he also had the mounts on Fireiron and Buccleuch, at Trentham m January. An obliging, civil, modest and well-behaved little chap, it is sad to realise that the Grim Reaper should have so discriminated as to rob the world .of this young^ jockey, whose already achieved victories marked him as one who m his profession was bound to have made a name for himself.
