THE NEWMARKET.

Ronald Cameron's Tale.

By the Maheno, which arrived from Sydney on Wednesday, came the Wanganui jockey, Ronald Camefooiij who went to Melbourne to ride Dusky Morn m the 'Newmarket ;. Ad' soon as thetboat was safely fjiooxed^ I engaged m a friendly chat with the auburn-haired lad, and persuaded him to tell the tale of the Newmar-\ ket race. v .'—..;' He said : "We had an uneventful time of it till the Saturday, fixed -for the race, and then all was hustle and excitement. The crowd at Ifleming* ton was not very large, and they, gave us a good reception. After the preliminaries were over we quickly got into line, twenty-nine of us, and m less time than it takes to tell the harrier rwas up and we .were off. I was m the middle and got out about two lengths the best of the field. The bay horse (Dusky Morn) fan very kindly, and at! five furlongs I was still m front amd sitting .'still. Then , nearest to me were Scotland! on< the rails and Akim Foo. Here ; I thought I was going, to will, easily;; as Hood was " riding, tire favorite v§ry hard with his hands and heels. But soon after this, with just about half a furlong to go, thefavorite; caught me, and when I moved on "the" , horse he stopped to a walk, and sixthtwas my position .at the finish! My.! horse fretted a good deal over there, : ahd was just starting to settle down when he had to race. At M^ntoke m the Newmarket trial he ran. very wildly and nearly ran .off the course^, and m the Bourke Handicap he W& s pulling for about three furlongs; When he stopped again. . Catapult' ran second at Sandown Park and' third, at Moonee Valley, but the handicappers took too much care of him:' At" Mentone he could not act at all well round the sharp bends and was. not tried again. We had amost enjoyr able time, and. l am looking: forwafd with much pleasure to a .trip next year; '
