In connection with the nniuimoth passenger liners which it is stated are projected both in this country and abroad it has been presumed that steam machinery must be utilised. According to the "Motor Ship' tills in by no ihcnns necessarily 'he case, tor even if an engine power up to GO.OOf) h.p. were required the demand could be met by in-ternal-combustion motors. A doubleacting two-stroke engine of 15.000 b.h.p. has already been built for stationary purposes, and double-acting four-cycle Diesel motors of 10.000 s.h.p. for marine propulsion are und'jr construction. The Icchnicul difficulties,, therefore, need not bn considered as overwhelming, nor a* more serious than those involved in Die employment of steam turbines and boilers working at high pressure. The fuel consumption of u motor liner would of eourso, l>o very much loss than that of a steamer, and there are other points wliirdi need to he closely examined before a final decision can be reached as to the most suitable type of propelling machinery for a CO,OOO-ton liner.
