IS THERE A PLAN?
BOTANICAL GARDENS ROAD REPLY GIVEN AT COUNCIL MEETING “A SKETCH, BUT NO SURVEY” The Mayor said at the City Council last night, in reply to a question, that there was no plan for the proposed road through the Botanical Cardens ; there was only tho old report made by the late Mr W. H. Morton many years ago, revived by the putting 111 of a few flags, etc., to show what had been intended. He did not know anything more than that. Later the Mayor said that a communication bad been received from Mr E. C. Jack, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed at a public meeting requesting that plans and details be made available re alterations to Kent and Cambridge terraces, and re roftd through Botanical Gardens from The Glen to Glenmore road. “This,” said the Mayor,” is a request for the plans. The answer is that there is no plan of aiiy proposed road through the Gardens, and the plan of Kent terrace is available for inspection any time they care to call for it.” The reply appeared to be agreed to. “A CONTOUR PLAN’* Councillor Troup: But there was a plan for tho road through tho Gaidens. The day the council went over, Mr Paterson had a plan, more particularly a plan showing the grades of the roads. Mr Luke (one of the engineering staff) said there was a contour plan—no details. The Mayor: . . . There was no working plan of any kind. Councillor Semple: I saw a rough plan. It was in the hands of Mr Scott the day we visited the Gardens. It showed the route the road was proposed to go. It was examined by other councillors, in addition to myself. Councillor Luckie: How old is that plan? It was made years ago, was it not? Mr Luke: No. It was made this year. The Mayor: The reply should he, then: There is no plan available for the road going through the Gardens; that a contour sketch is available, and can be inspected at the city engineer’s office. Councillors: What ia the use of the sketch ? The Mayor: No use at all, but I want to be perfectly open about it. Councillor H. D. Bennett said them
■should be no confusion about the sketch. It was not a survey. The whole thing cost about “thirty bob.” A councillor: Dear at that. “PROPOSAL NOT CONSIDERED” Councillor H. D. Bennett: I don’t know that any further notice should he taken of it. In point of fact, the
works committee hat never discussed it. This making a mountain out of a molehill has gone too far altogether. I suggest that this be the reply: “That such plans as are on hand are available in the office, but that there is not any actual survey made, and as tho proposal has not been considered it is not much use going any further with it.” Tho Mayor: Yes, the reply will be on those lines.
