YOUNG MAORI SHOT

NOT SERIOUSLY HURT ACCUSED REMANDED. GISBORNE, November 11. At Ruatoria last evening a young Maori named Thomas Joyce is alleged to have been shot by another named Potina Kaiwai, Joyce is not seriously injured. Five pellets entered the back and shoulder. Kaiwai was arrested bv Constable Neal and charged with attempted murder. Apparently there was no disturbance prior to the shooting, and strict reticence is being maintained. The two natives, it is understood, were at the rear of the stables about 11 o’clock when two shots are alleged to have been fired, and it is averred that Joyce escaped more serious injuries only by ducking low. As it was five pellets entered his hack and shoulders, but the injuries inflicted were not sufficiently serious to occasion alarm. The accused is a married man with one child. He was taken into custody and appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey. S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, Port Awnnui, this morning. On the application of the police he was remanded to appear at Ruatoria on Saturday.
