A departure from Wellington early yesterday morning was the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner lonic with passengers, mails and cargo for Southampton and London, via Panama. ORESTES LAUNCHED. To the order of Messrs Alfred Holt and Co., the, motor-ship Orestes was launched on April 14th from the yards of Workman, Clark and Co., Belfast. She is 476 feet in length, 58 feet in breadth, I 35 feet 3 inches in depth to the upper j deck, and is to have a load dispfacet ment of over 15,000 tons. THE LARGEST LINER. As to the world's largest liner, a certain amount of misconception has arisen sometimes regarding the claims of the Majestic and of the Leviathan. The verdict of the man who designed them should be good enough to settle the question. That man is Dr. Ernest Foerster, consulting engineer of the HamburgAmerican Line, and he says categorically that tlio Majestic was built six feet longer than the Leviathan, an<l that the Majestic has the greater tonnage if the same method of measurement be applied to both. Departure was taken from the lastnamed port on May . 2nd, and Colon reached on the morning of May Passage through the Panama Canal was obtained without delay, Balboa being left on tho same day. Coming across the Pacific the Min experienced fine weather and smooth seas until about a week ago, when strong south-west gales and high 6eas were encountered. Inese conditions continued almost to port. The Min is expected to sail for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin on Monday afternoon. According to tho annual report of the White Star Dine it is stated the freight position in all the company’s servioes was disappointing, and that there is no indication of an early improvement. Tho American passenger traffic was somewhat better, but the Canadian traffic was disappointing. There is, however, some prospect of improvement in view of the more liberal attitude towards immigration recently adopted by tho Canadian Government. Tlie net profit for tlio year 1925, at .£319,206, is substantially lower than that of 1924. which was £368,837, and is indeed the lowest earned in any one of the last ten years with the single exception of 1923, for which tho figure was only £311,560. The dividend, which was 7$ per cent, in 1924, and 5 per cent, in 1928, has been reduced to 5 per cent, again, and there is no appropriation to the reserve fund, which a year ago received £125,000, though, on the other hand, the carry forward, which last year was reduced by some £6OOO, ia now raised by nearly £70,000 to £187,234. THE CANADIAN CONQUEROR, With a cargo consisting of motorcars and general merchandise, the Canadian Government steamer the Canadian Conqueror arrived at Auckland from Halifax on Wednesday. For her present voyage the Canadian Conqueror loaded all her cargo at Halifax, sailing thence on April 30th. Strong head winds were experienced for the first few days, but conditions then improved. Colon was reached on May 10th, and after coaling at Cristobal the steamer passed through the Panama Canal* resuming her voyage from Balboa on the evening of tho same day. In the Pacific fine weather prevailed until June Ist, when strong head winds and rough sea§ were encountered* the con* ditions again improving on June sth. The remainder of the trip was made without incident. The Canadian Conqueror sailed from Auckland for Napier and southern ports yesterday. After completing her discharge in the south she is to load for New York, Boston, and Montreal, later returning to this port*to fill up. The rates of exchange on the cargo are:—Canada, 4.86d01.; U.S.A., 4.86d0i. The steamer is commanded by Captain J. Roou, who has with him the following officers:—First, Mr W. E. Bennett; second, Mr A.' C. Davy ; third. Mr C. J, L. Hatfield; chief engineer, Mr R. H. Murphy; second, Mr J. Mahen; third, Mr W. M. Service; fourth, Mr J. S. Sutherland; wireless operator, Mr J. R. Descoteaux; chief steward, Mr R. Sutherland. HERTFORD AT AUCKLAND. Loaded with general cargo, the Federal Steam Navigation Company's steamer Hertford arrived at Auckland from Home ports at a late hour The Hertford loaded her cargo at Newport, Avonmoufch, Glasgow, and Liverpool, and sailed finally from the lastnamed port on May Ist. Good weather conditions prevailed in the Pacific, and the vessel arrived at Caraca Bay, Curacao, on May Aftetf* the steamer's oil fuel tanks had been replenished the voyage was resumed and the* Hertford arrived at Colon on May 17th. On the same day 6he passed through the Panama Canal, and took in further oil fuel at Balboa before continuing her voyage across the Pacific Fine weather continued until after Pitcairn Island 'had been passed on May 19lh, when the conditions became stormy. From June let until Juno stli strong south-west gales with very high seas were experienced, the Hertford shipping large quantities of water, fore and aft. After the storm area had been passed fine weather was experienced to port. The Hertford is expected to leave Auckland about Thursday of next week for southern ports to unload tlie balance of 'her cargo and to commence loading for New York, Boston, and Home ports. According to a radio message received by the C. and D. Line the master < the Port Melbourne expects the vessel to arrive at Auckland late to-raoTrow night from London. The vessel has cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, and New Plymouth, and is due here about June 19th. TONGARIRO LEAVES LONDON. Cable advice received by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the steamer Tongariro left London on Juno 9th with cargo for discharge at Auckland. Wellington, Bluff, and Now Plymouth. She is duo at Auckland on July 17th, and at Wellington a week later. DEATH OF CLYDE SHIPOWNER. A prominent Clyde shipowner haR been removed by the death of Mr Thomas Prentice, who was for many years head of the firm of Messrs Prentice, Service, and Henderson. Mr Prentice received Iris training in the offices of the Anchor Line in Glasgow, and in 1882 he and the late Mr Clapperton formed the shipping concern known for a number of years as Messrs Prentice, Clapperton and Co. Later, Mr Henderson joined the firm, and it became Messrs Prentice, Service, and Henderson. Mr Prentice was closely identified with the trade between England and the West Indies.

MOTOR SHIP NORDPOL. | Built for. the Norden Steamship Company, Copenhagen, by Messrs Burmcister and Wain, the motor ship Nordpol has carried out successful trials. Ibis vessel is of similar design to the Nordbo. which visited Auckland about 18 months ago, and the Nordhval. Of Lloyd's highest class, and intended for the general cargo trade, the Nordpol is a closed shelter-deck vessel, 380 ft long between perpendiculars, 53ft 6in broad, nnd 36ft deep. The load draught is 26ft Tin, the deadweight capacity about 9000 tons, nnd the gross tonnage 5886 tons. The capacity of the holds is about 434,000 cubic feet (bales). The stipulated sea speed is 11 knots, nnd the fuel consumption eight tons per 24 hours. There are fire hatchways, 10 tliree-ton winches, and 10 j five-ton derricks, and, following Messrs Bunneistcr and Wain’s practice for motor ships, all the winches, the steering gear, and tlio anchor windlass are electrically driven.
