GEAR CHANGING
THE SYNCHRONOMETER. The synchronometer is a combination of speedometer and revolution counter so arranged that engine speed indications can be synchronised on any gear ratio. In addition to a road speed pointer there are three other pointers, each representing one gear in a three-speed box. Engine r.p.m. are shown by one of these operated by a centrifugal governor. On a quadrant controlling this pointer is a pin engaging with a second quadrant, which in turn operates another pointing hand. By suitably disposing the pivots of these quadrants, and also the contour of the face with which the pin previously mentioned comes into contact, the movement of the second pointer is given a relationship to the movement of the first pointer in proportion to the ratio between top and the next lower gear. Similarly, the third pointer is controlled by the second relatively to the next gear. The readings do not require to be watched closely. To change up or down, the gear lever is moved into neutral and the engine allowed respectively to de-celerate or to ■accelerate until the pointer corresponding to tlio desired gear coincides with the speedometer hand, when the gear lever is slipped into the Correct position. / “ By the aid of this compact instrument, gear, changes can be made at all speeds without using the clutch. Trip and total mileages also are recorded.
