DISEASE OF THE EYE
PREVALENT AMONGST MINERS DUB TO DEFECTIVE LIGHTING. Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Conyright. SYDNEY, March 13. Giving evidence on occupational diseases before the Royal Commission on the safe working, ventilating, and lighting of coal mines in New South Wales, Dr. Allen, of Newcastle, Said that for some years he had had man-* cases of nystagmus under his care. It was an occupational disease of tho nervous system, confined to workers in coal mines. Anyone who examined the conditions under which miners worked could not help coming to the conclusion that defective illumination was the sole cause of the disease. Tile oil safety lamp was far behind others in illumination. The naked light was easily the best and in naked light mines practically no nystagmus existed. The disease was not incurable.
