DOINGS AT ELLERSLIE

USEFUL WORK ON THE TRACK (“Times” Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, August 7. A little fine weather has allowed trainers to work out their charges and a fair amount of useful work' has been done. Seven horses were sent over the steeplechase country on -Thursday, the crack hunter, Llewellyn, being by far the most impressive, 12.13 is a big weigh!; for ag(>od horse, but the son °i- Lupullus is:fa top notcher in this class and one would be diffident about nominating one to beat him. His train®r, P. Conway, has not had many horses of class m bis care, hut it can be truthfully said that the big fellows condition doee his trainer credit. He will strip a fit horse next Saturday. Kawini, trained by R. Hall, at Papatoetoe, made a good showing behind Llewellyn on Thursday and many are picking him to defeat the big chap. The writer was one of those who was impressed by Kawini’g showing, • but with a knowledge of Llewellyn’s worth and fine condition, I expect him to run over the last round better than Kawini despite the fact that the latter has a big pull in the weights. Another to go very well was Stonewall. This fellow has apparently not been up long and may lack the hard condition that may be the only • thing to bring about his defeat in the Greenmount Steeples. Since big arrival at headquarters he has jumped splendidly and shown more pace than the average hunter. Ginger Qarl, whom it was thought a week ago would account for the Maiden Hunters’ Steeplechase, appears to be going off. However, he may be freshened up by next Saturday. Of the others, Cui Bono >s shaping well, hut he may find with others a little trouble over the last half-mile. There are several promising candidates frpm the Waikato, but they have not yet appeared at Ellerslie, and it is best to leave comment on their torn, until next Saturday, l / which time one may have had an opportunity of seeing them in action at Ellerslie. King Amans continues to work with great freedom, and he will .have an army of admirers for the Hunters’ Hurdles. Kauri Park,:who is a really good one hut a hard proposition to.keep going, is steadily improving. If he continues as at present, he may he the ultimate choice, but more Mion when one compares the local with the AYaikato candidates. Broadjvood galloped well on Thursday, but is still showing soreness. I doubt his ability to win next week. Knighthood continues on the right way and may stay better than most of those engaged in the Mile Hack Race. Lady Ridicule is ready and is a real picture. She is advantageously situated to score next Saturday. Passionate and Arch Amie, the latter particularly, are working best of the Jellicoe Handicap candidates, and with Doleful Ditty, trained at Avondale, are the prime fancies.
