AN URGENT NEED

HALF-WAY HOUSES - OPINION AT INQUEST. Per Thw DUNEDIN, July 27. The need for a half-way house between the general hospital _ and the mental hospital was emphasised by the coroner this morning.' At the inquest on Isabella Jane Whyte, found drowned in the Leith river on Tuesday, Dr. Marshall Macdonald gave evidence that deceased suffered from insomnia and depression. It was not a case for committal to a mental hospital, but a typical case for a half-way house. Dr Macdonald added they needed one or two words with twelve to twenty beds for such cases. Plans for this were drawn up years ago, and evidently the Government intended to recognise its responsibility. The coroner, in finding a verdict of suicide daring depression, remarked on the- medical evidence, and the urgent need shown for a half-way house.
