Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., returned from the south on Saturday. Dr McLean, medical superintendent at Prikeora Sanatorium, has been ordered by his medical adviser to take a two-months’ holiday in the south. Major Thurkettle, of the Salvation Army, Wellington, has gone to Christchurch to conduct the annual musical week-end in the citadel. Major Thurkettle ' was stationed for several years in Christchurch prior to his promo ton and transfer to National Headquarters, Wellington. Dr Leslie Will, orthopaedic surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital, has been granted two months’ leave of absence to allow him to go to Australia and study a special treatment for certain forms of paralysis. Dr W. Fox, the superintendent, approved of the request, saying that the work waa ol tile greatest importance. Hie Highness the Maharaj of Jhalawar, accompanied fij his suite, whs has been travelling in the South Island, motored over the hills to Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon, catching the ferry steamer in the evening for Wellington, and arrived in .the city yesterday morning.

The Rev. H. S. Conway, of the China Inland Mission, and three newlyaccepted missionaries for the mission, arrived by the Mararoa in Wellington on Saturday. Starting at Dunedin on July 11th, they have been Having farewell meetings at the principal towns in! the South Island, and commence their North Island tour to-day.

Word has been received at Palmerston North of the death at Sydney, as the result of a motor accident at Paddington, .of Mr Thomas Alsop, formerly a resident of Palmerston North. Deceased was the only surviving son of Mr and Mrs A, Alsop, Manawatu Heads. During the war he was engaged on troopship work between Australia and Europe. .His wife resides in Australia, and two sisters, Mesdames J. P. Stubbs and H. Thomson, live at Palmerston North.

Two candidates are definitely in the field for the Christchurch North seat. They are Messrs J. H. Flesher and E. H. Andrews. At the election in 1922, Mr Andrews contested the seat in the Reform interest, but the party does not officially endorse his candidature, in view of the undertaking given by Mr L. M. Isitt not to vote against the Massey Government, if the liberal Party bad to rely Upon the extreme Labour support to retain office. Mr Flesher has not previously contested a Parliamentary ejection. It is probable that other names may be submitted to the ballot.

Inspector A.' Cameron, who hxs been transferred from Christchurch to Gisborne, was met hy the Christchurch Police Force,- when a* presentation, consisting-of a set of stainless cutlery, was made- to- himself and Mrs Cameron. Senior-Sergeant F. Lewin, who made the presentation, referred to the pod feeling that had always existed between Inspector Cameron and - the other members of the force, and hoped that he arid Mrs Cameron would 'find their change of residence a pleasant arid beneficial one. Sergeants Macnamara and McGregor also spoke. Inspector Cameron suitably replied. Mri Roderick Harold Miller, a eon of Mr D. MiHer, died suddenly at Sydney on July 23rd, at the age of SI years. The late Mr Miller was educated at Boseneath School and Wellington 061lege. After leaving kchool, he joined the New Zealand Shipping Company, and, when the war broke out, ho was serving in the Australian Navy, as a member of which he participated in the occnpation of German New Guinea. ■He returned to Australia suffering from malaria, and after the war come eI T “aland, -where he joined up with the Union .Steam Ship Company.
