BUTTER COMPETITION
CHAMPIONSHIP OF WORLD WIDESPREAD INTEREST CREATED MANY ENTRIES FROM OVERSEAS (By Telegraph—Special to “Times.’’) AUCKLAND. July 23. The first world’s championship butter competition, whioh will be held at the forthcoming Auckland winter exhibition, is creating intense and widespread interest in the dairying world, and the entries, which closed yesterday, 'total "87,. of which 43' are from .New Zealand factories. • The fact that ovei half the entries come from overseas is striking evidence of the importance attached to the competition by the leading butter producers of the world. The Australian factories are particularly well represented with a tdtal cf 29 entries drawn from Queensland, New South Wales. Victoria, and-Tasmania, and there is an entry from Denmark, the Dominion's chief, competitor in the world. markets. The central States of America, Minnesota. Wisconsin .and iowa. .have. forwarded entries, and two have-also been received from Fiji. Strong competition is expected from Ireland, no. fewer than nine separate entries having been received from that country. Of these five are from Limerick county, two from Kerry, and two from Kilkenny. The butter from Ireland was shipped by the Bemueia which arrived at .Wellington last week. It was expected that Esthonia would be a competitor, inquiry having been received from that country about the competition, but no entry has come to hand. The priae money offered ffir competition totals £IOO. the first prize being £SO; the second £3O. and, the third £3O. In addition gold medals will be presented to the successful competitors. DAIRY FARM OF EMPIRE Ne'edless to state the overseas entrants are not competing for the value of tho money Prize. The Dominion is regarded not only as the dairy farm of the Empire but has also gained enviable reputation for its product. in the world markets. Any country capable of' competing with the Dominion factories in the competition under review must have reached a high standard of dairy manufacture; and the* winning award to any overseas couilfrv would be a priceless advertisement of superfine quality,; of the successful country’s product. New-Zealand’s 48 entries in the competition are drawn, from all parts of the Dominion, both the : North: and South Islands being strongly represented. Should the first award ifi the first world’s " championship ’ butter' competition go to a Dominion company the successful factory manager will have done much to. strengthen the prestige of New Zealarid.as the producer of the world’s best butter. ' Recognising the importance of the occasion the winter exhibition committee invited the Commonwealth Government to send a steward from Australia to witness the judging of entries. Definite information as . to whether -an appointment will he made" by the Australian : Government has not yet been received, hut it is anticipated that an expert, " will come across. Judging will be in acord-; ance with the Dominion standards, and" will he performed by officers of the Government Dairy Division. In the process .of judging the source of various exhibits will not be known to. the judges.
