CHARLES DARWIN’S COFFIN

A massive oak coffin, made for Charles Darwin, when lie lived at Doivne village, has been found in an old coachhouse, now used as a garage, at the New Inn, Farnborough. Darwin lay in the coffin for 36 hours, but when it was decided that he should be buried in Westminster Abbey, another coffin was sent from Londcm. The coffin, which has a tarnished metal plate with the inscription: “Charles Robert Darwin, died April 19, 1882; aged 73;” was last seen 20 years ago. when a former landlord of the inn bought it from tho local carpenter.
