EARLY SHIPPING* HISTORY. Old identities and their descendents throughout New Zealand will, no doubt, be interested in a pubUcation which is now being put through the press in Auckland dealing with the early arrival of sailing ships at the principal ports of the Dominion from London, Glasgow, Liverpool, and other Home ports. The book is the wrk' of Mr Henry Brett, one of the old school of Auckland journalists, and founder of the "Auckland Star." Mr Brett has devoted practically the whole of" his time during the past two years in compiling this valuable publication, and has gone to considerable expense in gathering full details of every ship which visited the various ports from 1848 to 1900. The book will be the most complete record of the early sailing ship days associated with the Dominion ever published, and should command a brisk sale. The publication will contain about 400 pages- of reading matter and will be profusedly illustrated. Mr Brett was fortunate in securing photographs of practically every ship and her captain which visited New Zealand in the early days. Many of tho ships referred to in the book were fast clippers, and their names are often mentioned to this day. The voyage of every vessel is dealt with in details and! as scores of them had sensationel passages, one! can realise the wealth of interesting matter which the book contains, The Otago" records alone will occupy Scores of pages, as the majority of the immigrant Ships came to this port in tile ’7o’s and ’Bo’s, .while the deseendents o# these two first ships—John Wickliffe and Philip Laing—will read again about the voyage of these vessels from England and their arrival at Port Chalmers with the first settlers who founded this • prosperous province. The work of compiling the .Otago, records was placed in the hands of a Dunedin journalist.. It was a big undertaking, as it involved suoh a vast amount of detail work, but the contract was completed. in the time stipulated by Mr Brett;, The work of ; compiling the Lyttelton records was also a big task,, but was completed on contract time by a Christchurch journalist. The famous old ships of the. New Zealand Shipping Company will' figure promonentIy ih the book. The first copies of the publication are expected to reach Dunedin some, time this week. An "Otago Daily Times” reporter had: the privilege recently of persuing the first 200 pages of the book when visiting Mr Brett at his home at Takapuna, and! was thus able to gain some idea of the vast amount of work undertaken by the author. Mr Brett, who is to be complimented oh the result-of his efforts, will * probably issue a second volume at a later date, dealing with other sailing ships and tho principal early wrecks which occurred around rthe New Zealand ©oast. •
