SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Captain and the hon. Mrs Tabu Rhodes, of Canterbury, arrive early this week in Wellington and will bo the gulesits of ' the Governor-General and Viscountess Jellicoe for the winter races. Sir George and Lady Clifford, of Christchurch, have come to Wellington for the races. Mrs Duncan Black, who has heen staying in Christchurch for a Holiday, has returned to Wellington. Mrs W. H. Montgomery, of Little River, came north on Saturday. After a short stay in Wellington she will visit Lady Wilson, at Bulls.

Mrs M. Louisson, of Christchurch, is visiting Wellington. Miss Denshire, of Christchurch, ri at present in Wellington, and leaves early in the week for Auckland, where aha will spend a short holiday. Miss H. Mee is visiting Christ, church.

Donors of prizes at the Blanket Ball on Friday night were Stewart Dawson’s, Pasoall and Co., Mr Appleton, Mr Smith, Wairarapa Farmers Mrs Jacob Joseph and Mrs Meadowcroft.

Miss Leila Bridgman, Rational Girls' Work Secretary for the Y.W.C.A., arrived from the south on .Friday. The committee of the Hataitai branch of the Plunket Society intend holding their next = dance at the Kilbirnie Hall on Wednesday next. The publio will have pleasant recollections of previous entertainments given, oy the Hataitai committee, comprising, Mesdames Ardell, Batt, Payne, - Sturzaker, Oaldow, Jackson, Bennett and Luke, all of whom are most enthusiastic workers. Dancing will commence at 8 p.m., and the object being a worthy one, it is anticipated there wi'.l be a large attendance. The Columbian Orchestra will supply the musii. At a welcome afternoon tea given vii Saturday by the governing body of the Girls’ Citizens -to Miss Leilla Bridgman, girls’ work secretary for ’ the Young Women’s Christian Association, of Australia and New Zealand, an interesting' discussion on the use of the competition system in the club programme for girls ensued. Miss Bridg;mau held that we must get down to the motion which prompts an action. Stimulated efforts were sometimes ne oessary to: arouse interest and awaken desire for knowledge, but the compe tition element should not play too big a part. We should train out girl citizens to the highest ideals of working and playing for the pure joy of the occupation, and not for the glory of attaining the prize or receiving dis-. tinction of any. kind. Mrs Seddon widow cf the late Right Honourable Richard John Seddon, -a visiting Auckland to sav farewell to Mrs Hay, wife of Dr. Hay, of Wei lington, who was ifyliss Mary Soddcu prior to her marriage (says tli“Star”). Dr. and Mrs Hay are proceeding to Euiope for a holiday trip, and left by the Rimutaka.

A Press Association message from Oamaru reports the death of Marj Westland Bain, who'arrived in Otago ix 1859 and was in her 90th year. Mr Brian Derry, only eon of Mr and Mrs W. H. Derry, erf Perth, W.A., is to be married on 16th inst., to Miss Sylvia Parker. Mr W. H. Derry is well-known as resident manager for Western Australia of Australian Mutual Provident Society. The many friends of Mrs C. H. Chapman will he pleased to know that she is now recovering from her recent serious illness, and hopes to 'be aibout again within a few days. A delightful evening was held at “The Lounge,” Lower H"ibt, recently, 'when the committee of the Hutt branch, W.N.R., gave a dance in aid of the Reaideiftial Nursery. Good music and an excellent floor helped towards the jollity of the occasion. The ladies present who were responsible for this effort were—Mrs McArthur (president). Wearing brown marocain; Mrs Vickery, beautiful gold frock, trimmed with brown fur; Mrs Meek, dainty shot taffetas frock; Mrs Lloyd, amiber toned satin and lace; Mrs Grundy, delightful frock of almond green* marocain; Mrs Willis, black satin and gold leaves; Miss McArthur, silver frock with overdress of rosepink georgette. Amongst those present were Misses Pomare, Jervis, Bunny, Chapman, Ellis, Myers, Mcßain, Dennis, and Messrs Vickery, Willis. '•McArthur, Steward, Pearce, Rainey, Bolt, and others.

BROOKLYN BABY SHOW The Brooklyn ibalby show promoted' by the committee of N. 4 candidate in the queen carnival was held in the Methodist school room and grounds on Saturday afternoon under favourable , circumstances which enabled most of the judging to take place in the sunshine. There was a- good entry of babies, and prizes were awarded ae follow: —'Girl under 6 months, Irene Tait; girl under 12 months, Joyce Willis; girl under two years, Mavis Barker: girl under three years, Joan Maxwell. Boy undler 6 months, Albert St. Martin; boy under 12 months, Robert Caldwell; hoy under two years, Howard Bait and Allan Henderson (equal): boy under three years, lan Cunningham. Special prizes for Glaxo babies: Girl, Jean Wardon; boy, Jack Bast. Mesdames McVioar and Pairton aoted as judges. Messrs J. Nathan, $1- Seddon, A. Pickett and others ’ donated prizes. Afternoon tea was kindly digpansed by a committee of ladies.

Y.W.C.A. CHOIRS AN INTERESTING CONTEST. A contest between choirs from the different girls’ clubs in ■ connection with the Y.W.C.A. was held in the Town Hall on Saturday night before a good audience, which included Lady Luke, Mrs Webster, Mrs Jolly, Mrs Bennie, Mrs Adams, Miss Dunlop, Miss Bridgeman (girls’ work secretary), Miss Fair and others interested in t/he work. The choirs taking part were: —Junior Haersmai, under Madame Mueller; Okarea, Miss Castle: Newtown, Miss Henderson; IRaumafraira, Mr Lem Barnes: Fetone, Mr Sherwin; seniors, Timbuaha, under Miss Henderson; Wohelo, Mr C. Howe; Lakomai, Mr W. J. Robbins; Okarea, Mr J. H. Hendle; Huia, Mr Len Barnes. The test pieces in the junior section were “Birdies’ Message,” accompanied, and “Now is the, Month of May,” unaccompanied. In the senior section, “As It Fell Upon a Day,” accompanied, and “Sweet and Low,” unaccompanied. Mr Temple White was the judge, and at the conclusion he remarked! upon the excellent progress, and marked improvement shown since last year. He congratulated the various choirs on their singing. The winners were: —Juniora: Raumaharo, under Mr Len Barnes, first with 6d and' 73 marks, total 134. Haeremai (Mod’ame Mueller) 2, 63 and 68, total 131; and Newtown (Miss Henderson), 3 62 and 65, total 127. The other Choirs reoeived: Okarea, 60 and .68, total 118; and! Petone, 60 and 57,' total 107. In., the senior section Huia (Mr Len Barnes) was first with 71 and 72 marks, total 143; Timbuaka .(Miss Henderson), 2, with 73 and! 67, total 140; Lakoim/ad (W. J. Robbins), 3, 66 and 61, total 137; the other choirs receiving Okarea, 55 and 67, total 122; and Wohelo, 64 and 55, total 119. The .winning choirs are entering for the Wellington competitions next month. Mr F. Pope moved! a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Temple White for adjudicating, andi to Mr W. P. MoLaahdan and Mr O. Barry for stage managing; also to the ladies of the Y.W.C.A. who organised the contest.

AT THE SHOW There was a large assemblage at the Harbour, Board’s sheds where .the winter show was opened on Saturday afternoon. Has Excellency the GovernorGeneral performed the several opening ceremonies, and was accompanied by Lqdy Jedliooe and the Hon. Luoy Jelhooe, Gornmander Dove, A.D.C., being in attendance. Lady Jellicoe, wore a coat and skirt of brown gaberdine, braided; a brown velvet hat with feathers,' and saible funs. The Hon. Lucy Jellicoe was in, “cafe au lait” coloured costume, and 1 hat to match. Mrs Salmon, who accompanied her father, the Hon. W. F Massey, wore a long fur coat over a dark costume and brown hat; Lady Luke wore a fur coat, ermine tie and purple toque with black ospreys; Miss Downie Stewart wore dark grey with ooat of grey and rose embossed velvet, finished with furs, and black hat with ospreys; Mrs Shirtoliffe, who was also on the platform, wore a long grey coat finished with braiding and, fur, and .black hat. Lady Jellicoe and Mrs Salmon were presented with bouquets by Miss Evelyn Goldsmith, and Mrs Downie Stewart with one by Miss Joyce Goldsmith, daughters of Mr J. Goldsmith, secretary of the social committee of the car naval. The Mayoress, Mrs R. A. Wright, was also present with Has Worship the Mayor, and among the visitors were the Hon. Sir Francis Bell, the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes and Lady Rhodes, Miss Rhodes, Mr O. M. and Mrs Luke. Mr and Mrs Myers. Mr and Mrs M. Myers, Bon. Mr McLeod, Sir Joseph Ward.
