HOCKEY

SATURDAY’S GAMES INTERESTING MATCHES IN LOCAL COMPETITIONS. WELLINGTON DEFEAT HUTT A. RESULTS AT A GLANCE Wakatu 4 v. Hutt B 0. Karori 3 v. ’Varsity 1. Weslev 2 v. Petone 0. Wellington 2 v. Hutt A 1.

The senior hookey competition was continued on Saturday, under clear skies, but on grounds sodden by tho heavy rain overnight. All three games at Karori Park were keenly contested, that between University and Karori proving most popular with the spectators. 'Varsity were not quite at their best, otherwise Karori would have been run round considerably more. As it was, Karori did not seem in a position to withstand serious opposition. The play throughout was fast and open, ana was productive of some good snatches of bright and clever hockey. Wakatu disposed of the Hutt B team, not, however, without having to look carefully to the defence of their own goal-mouth on more than one occasion. Hutt has improved a great deal, as may be judged by the score, and it was certainly only the negligence of the finer points of the game which prevented their netting. Wesley were not able to compile a score at all against Petone during the first period, and it was only in tho second half that they took their opponents to task and made two goals. Petone were on the verge of scoring more often than wot. but their efforts were unrewarded. Their backs are quite safe, and the team will no doubt register what will be a well-deserved win at no distant date.

KARORI v. ’VARSITY FORMER CLUB’S WIN. Karori were run round to a considerable extent by the College eleven, which was working well in the first part of the game. The 'Varsity hacks were weakened through the absence of Hollings and Laurie, who were, however, well replaced by Burton ana Grant. The game was fast throughout, and ’Varsity, although they only notched one goal, camo close to scoring on several occasions. Karori, who were nursing _ the absence of Watchman on the life wing, were not up to thefir usual form, and their scores were not secured through good team work. Perrin played his usual excellent game, while Shaw, who had Hull’s place on the full-back line, was very noticeable This player is in his first season's hockey, and jf he keeps to the stick game will be heard of in the near future. Spires, oh the left, was solid on the defence. For 'Varsity, Francis, in the right-half position, played good hockey throughout, and although he was responsible for one or two faults, was always where he was wanted. Beere, in the forwards, who was indirectly responsible for the Collegians’ only goal, played well, and ha 3 lost none of bis dash. The score in question was netted by Cousins, after Beere bad taken it up the field', eluding the backs, and carrying it to the cchl-mouth. He then passed well to Cousins, who made no mistake ’about, the score. Cooper opened- matters- by scoring for Karori, Moore carrying the-leather up-field and passing out. At half-time, with Karori one up, it looked as though ’Varsity Would pile up a total in ine second half. Ebon after the commencement, however, Perrin. netted a particularly fine shot fTom a difficult angle, and again shortly after Cooper notched another goal. Beere then scored for 'Varsity, which made the total 3—l. The scores were not altered. Mt Whyte ably conducted the game.

WEBLEY v. PETONE SUBURBAN CLUB DEFEATED. The Wesley-Pet'one match produced good hockey throughout, but with snatches of play savouring of indiscriminate . hitting. ” The first spell was particularly fast, and showed Petone as a fair combination, v»ifh a good back line, and a fairly .Competent van. Wesley, who are very keen, were aggressive, and kept the ,Petone,. goalie well occupied. The goalie was -'erv safe, and was tho means of saving several hard shots. At half-time-, after. a particularly fine exhibition of hockey, ho scores had been made by either side The Petone fullbacks, Martin and Duncan, were defending well. ■ Wesley attacked strongly, and although Petone did their best to place themselves on the offensive, the blues netted twice. Play was fast and open, but Wesley were not producing much combined effort. Mills, the in-6ide left, who usually plays left-wing, secured from a scuffle and shot in. Some time after Boyes, the left-wing, took matters in hand, and secured the other goal. The score ended 2—o in Wesley’s favour. Mr Watchman was referee. WAKATU v. HUTT B

EASY WIN FOR CITY CLUB

Wakatu scored three times within the first ten minutes of their game with the Hutt B team, but for all that their efforts to score again during the first spell were frustrated by the determined defence put up by the riversiders. The players from Hutt put up a very good game, but it was not expected that they would outdo the whites at a stage so far advanced in the, competition. They have nevertheless improved vastly, and the team appears to have been paying a good deal or attention to the. rectifying of those faults which-marred their play earlier in the year Their rearguard is particularly improved, but on the whole the team made several mistakes. Melvin and Barry, in the .forwards, were noticeable for their forceful tactics, while R. Upton, playing at right-half, was responsible for some good moves. At half-time D. and -W. Hood had both scored for Wakatu, as well as MeGavin, whereas Hutt had made no score. In the second part of the journey Hutt livened considerably, anil came to grips with Wakatu near their goal several times. Lack of finish and faulty passing amongst the forwards, however, precluded their chances of scoring. S. Adams netted again for Wakatu, bringing up the total to 4—o, at which figure the score remained until the end. Atkinson, the Hutt goalie, was playing an excellent ?ame, and was undoubtedly responsible or saving numerous shots from entering his net. The Hutt eleven were unfortunate in not making any score, as their attack was, at times, quite worthy of better results. Barry and Upton each had unsuccessful shots at goal. Wakatu were not Beriously tried out, however, and II good game ended in favour of the letter combination.

WELLINGTON v. HUTT A

WELL CONTESTED GAME. The best game of the day undoubtedly that played between the Wellington and Jlufct elevens, on the Hutt Recreation ground. After a game full of incident

from ■ the first bully to the last whistle the Wellington team came out on top. which result was no doubt a surprise fo many, but a well-deserved and hardearned win for the red and whites. The Wellington team was hot finally decided upon until the morning of the match, and the fact that the team was disarranged through the absence of several players, and the addition of two juniors, makes the team’s victory all the more creditable. After such a set-back —the first of the season—the riversiders will have te "buck up’’ in order* to make no mistakes about their games in the future. Wellington have been playing keen and well-fought matches all the season, and have worked their way up the senior ladder until now they are one point behind .the leaders. Miller and Taylor, two junior players,' were promoted for the day, and fully justified their inclusion. ■ Ashwin was playing inside right, and C. Martin turned out at centre half. The alterations admittedly made a difference to the team’s work, but the red and whites have a habit of turning out with a much altered team and turning the scales in their own favour. The game was played in-the best of spirits, and throughout incident followed incident in rapid succession. Jacobsen and Taylor were tho scorers for Wellington, and Lusty netted for Hutt.
