Stories of the existence of the remains of a prehistoric monster in the bed of a creek east of Taihape have been current for some years. There is n Maori legend that this monster once roamed the upland country of "Waiouru Plains and the rugged fast-news of JCairaanawa ranges. Now comes a more modem version. In 1882, Mr P. Bedllington, a 'well-known surveyor, was cutting up the Te Awarua block, and i embedded in. the sandstone in the bed lof the Waiteweta stream he discovered | the fossilised remains of the monster, 160 ft in length. Mr S. A. Mair, engl'neer to the Rangitikei Council, ways that personally ho believes the remains are still there waiting to be rediscovered. He is, he says, now arranging for another expedition to explore the river.
