TELEGRAPHIC MATCH. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. When play in the above" telegraphic match ceased on July 22nd, eight of the twenty games were marked incomplete. Negotiations regarding these have taken place between Air J. O. Grierson (Auckland captain) and Air W. E. Mason (the local captain). They have come to a complete agreement, and it will therefore not be necessary to invoke the services of the Otago Adjudication Board. Draws are recorded at boards 3,5, 10, 14 and 15. Auckland gets a win at board 12, and Wellington scores wine at boards 17 (A. L. Lawson) and 20 (Airs Gyles), who is to be congratulated on making a successful first appearance in telegraphic play. The match thus enda in a tie, each side scoring ten points. Auckland is, however, to be congratulated on getting a “leg-in” for the New Zealand Club’s Championship, having made tho - better score. at the first twelve boards, viz., 6$ to Wellington’s ss. It is a coincidence that when playing Otago a month earlier Wellington had exactly the same experience as against Auckland, viz., a tie in tho annual fixture, but “one down” at the first twelve boards. The soore of the recent match is as follows:
(a) In 1891 the final tally was Wellington Bs, Auckland 6s, after three evenings’ play. The many spectators included two of New Zealand’s strongest players, viz., tho late Hon. John Ball an ce (Prime Minister) and Sir Robert Stout, who founded the Dunedin Chess Club in 1865. (b) In 1895 the final tally was Wellington 13, Auckland 7, after three evenings’ play, and the adjudication of five unfinished games by the late Air Henry Hookham, of Christchurch (New Zealand’s first champion). (c) In 1899 the final soore was Auckland 10, Wellington 5, after two evenings’ play, and the adjudication of five games hy Air R. A. Cleland, of Dunedin (the then New Zealand chams pion). { (d) In 1902 tho result was Wellington 12$, Auckland 7s, after three evenings’ play. Seven of the games were adjudicated on by the late Mr David Forsyth, of Dunedin (then exchampion of New Zealand). The many spectators included the late Mr Justice Dennistou, a very strong exponent of the game, who was at that time president of the New Zealand Chess Association. (e) In 1904 the final soore was: Wellington 12, Auckland 8, after a keen struggle extending over four evenings. Six of the games were adjudicated on by the late" Mr David Forsyth. (f) In 1920 three evening® were devoted to this fixture, the result being Wellington 13$, Auckland 6s. Agreement was reached by the captains on the one game unfinished when play ceased. (g) In 1921 Auckland won by one game (10$-9s), after four games had been adjudicated on in Dunedin. (h) This year’s match ends in a tie, as recorded above. It has been the privilege of two Wellington players to take part in all these contests, viz., Messrs W. Alaokay and F. K. Kelling.
