OBITUARY
WILLIAM C. KENSINGTON, 1.5.0. END ' OF USEFUL- CAREER. Per Press Association. —Extraordinary. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 20. Obituary—At Marton, this morning, William Charles Kensington, 1.5.0., farmer Under-Secretary for Lamds, and ex-Mayor. He is survived by two daughters and three sons. William Charles Kensington was bam at “Wemdu,” Oiooieth, North Wales, on August 2nd, 1845. He was the eldest son of Charles J. H. Kensington, of “Prince Hill.” - Wortcm, of Wiltshire. He was married, in 1867 to Emily, daughter of G. Owen Grimsby, who died in 1869, and re-married in 1873 to Amy, daughter of the Hon. Lieut.-Oolonel Wm. H. Kenny, M.L.C., of His Majesty’s 73rd Regiment, who was killed by a motor-oar accident in Deoember, 1906. Deceased wag educated at Grosvnenor 9chool, Bath, and King’s School, Bruton, Somerset. He came to the Dominion in 1862, and entered the New Zealand Government service in 1864. He was a prominent volunteer, and saw service with the militia. In the East Coast campaign of the years 1863-64, he served as a Volunteer, being gazetted as ensign of the Ist Battalion New Zealand Militia in the following year. He was made a captain in the Auckland Rifle Brigade in 1871. In 1901 he was appointed Permanent Under-Seoretary for Lands and Immigration, which position he held until nis retirement in 1912. In 1909 he was awarded the Imperial Service Order in recognition of his meritorious services; he was a justice pf the peace, and held the New Zealand War Medal. _ After his retirement he left his house in Wellington to make his home at “Cheverell,” Rangitikei, Marton, where his death occurred.
