Talk Wellington! Here’s a little story. SCENE: On the top of a double-decker bound for Lvall Bay. TIME: Somewhere between 5.30 and 6 p.m. Persons : Two average citizens, homeward-bound after a hard day’s work—or, at least, we’ll suppose so. The first average citizen was lucky enough to secure a seat in the city, while the second, less fortunate, had to stand until the car reached Newtown, when he sat down beside No. 1, a total stranger. ;ist. A.C.: “Pretty rough riding.” 2nd. A.C.: “Yes, rather.” [(A pause while each racked his brain for some original remark.} 2nd. A.C.: “Decent spell of weather we’re having.” jst. A.C.: “Yes, fine.” 2nd. A.C.: “Wellington’s not such a bad place after all.” Ist. A-C.: “No, it’ll do me, though it’s an awful place for wind.” 2nd. A.C.: “O, I don’t know. I’ve lived in Christchurch for years; it blows a jolly sight worse down there. If it isn’t blowing a Nor’-Wester, it’s bound to be Sou’-East, and clouds of dust whichever way it blows. I reckon Wellington has the best all-round climate in the Dominion.” Ist. A.C.: “I believe you’re right. Wellington certainly is healthy, and we don’t get the extremes.” (Just then the car reached the top of Constable Street, and the enchanting view of Evans Bay, Miramar Peninsula and the mountains beyond cast its spell over our citizens.) and. A.C.: “Just look at that! See the moon shining on the water. Isn’t it a treat? You’ll see nothing to equal this view anywhere in New Zealand.” Ist. A.C.: “Too right, it’s a bonser view and no mistake.” Our friend, 2nd. A.C., hopped off a few minutes later.
