WALKING CONTEST
PUBLIC SERVICE DEPARTMENTS. A meeting of delegates from various departments in the Public Service woe held on Thursday eveningfi when it was decided to continue the Public Servloe walking contest that was inaugurated last year. The course was fixed from the Belmont railway station to the Thomdon esplanade, a distance of about eleven miles, and it was thought that the afternoon of Saturday, September 16th, would be a suitahle date. All competitors are to start equal, but the departmental teams this year will consist of not more than ten members, the first four to finish being reckoned as the official team. As was the case last year, the competition will he on a strictly amateur basis, gold medals being awarded to the winning team and medals and trophies given to probably the first twenty to finish. Mr R. W. McVilly, General Manager of Railways, was elected president, Mr W. R. Jourdain, Lands and Survey Department, chairman of the executive, and Mr R. W. Cooper, Lands and Survey Department, as non. secretary.
