OBITUARY
MR ERNEST NORDON. ♦SPORTSMAN AND BUSINESSMAN PASSES. General regret was expressed when the death was announced yesterday of Mi Ernest Nordon, who passed away in a private hospital after having been in failing health for some time. Mr Nordon spent most of his business life in Canterbury, but was well-known in Wei lington. which he visited frequently, particularly on matters connected with the licensing trade. Latterly he resided in Wellington. i Mr Nordon was born in London in 1860, and left England as a youth. After three years spent in America and tweWe months in Australia he came to New Zealand, and arrived in Auckland in 1890. There'ho resided for eleven years, and was engaged in business as a Press agent, an avocation which he has since followed in Ashburton and Christchurch. As a member of the Order of Foresters in Auckland, be rose to the position of District Sub-Chief Hanger. His departure precluded him from accepting the position of District Chief Ranger, but his fellow' Foresters presented him with a jewel denoting his office. For several years Mr Nordon was secretary of the Auckland Cycling Club, and he was also on the Council of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen, on which he represented North Canterbury. He had also a seat on the council of the Amateur Swimming Association, on which he represented. Westland. He was for some time secretary of the New Zealand Hockev Association, and was also an cc* tive member of the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Association. For some years Mr Nordon was secretary of the Canterbury Licensed Victullers Association, and he was a wellknown figure at practically all conferences connected with the Trade. Owing to ill-health he resigned from this position and went abroad, intending to settle in South Africa. Some little time ego. however, he returned to New Zealand and resided in Wellington.
He was particularly interested in swimming, and donated the Nordon Shield, a coveted trophy. His health has been a source of anxiety to his friends for quite a while, and the news of his death will b© received with sorrow in many parts of Now Zealand.
