BUTCHERS IN CONFERENCE

NEW ZEALAND FEDERATION. WORKERS AND ARBITRATION COURT. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, September 16. The New Zealand Operative Butchers’ Federation held its annual conference herd to-day. It was decided to issue a quarterly journal-;-Also- to -secure an amendment of the Shops and Offices Act, with a view to securing a universal half-holiday for the industry throughout the Dominion. Conference lengthily discussed the methods of electing the -workers’ representative to the Arbitration Court, and passed a resolution urging on -the Government the necessity of amending the Arbitration Act in such a manner ae to provide that only those unions working under awards and industrial agreements registered under the Act should have the right to vote for the election of a representative. In the .opinion of the conference this was the only-safe-guard which those unions have. It seemed ridiculous to the conference that any organisation, purely because it was registered under the. Act, for reasons of its own, but never seeks the aid of the court in the settlement of disputes, should be allowed a voice in the selection of the workers’ representative.
