July 30>—Christchurch Hunt Club. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine.”) The next fixture on the calendar is the Marlborough autumn meeting, set down for Mav 6th and 7th. A fair-sized team from Trentham is being got ready to make the trip. The steeplechase season opens next month at Hawera, where the Egmont winter fixture takes place on May 11th and 12th. Marauder, who ran a first and a second at Timaru. has a good reputation. He is by Sanquhar—Brown Owi. A. Reed had a great run at Hastings, where he rode three winners in succession on the last day. H. Gray also performed the hat trick. Mistian, who paid a substantial dividend when he scored a fluky win at Trentham as 'a two-year-old, has been nominated for the open Welter at the Marlborough meeting. The imported sire Catmint arrived in Wellington last week-end, and goes to Auckland. Catmint is by the Carbine horse Spearmint from Red Laly, by Persimmon. Catmint was a good stayer. He is twelve years old. Two horses also arrived for Mr J. B. Reid, the southern breeder. They are the bay horse Paper Money, 6ired in 1915, by Greenback (St. JTru-squin—Ever Green), from Epping Rose (by Eager— Briar). Greenback was a more than usoful performer, and won 9821 sovs in stakes. Had he beaten Lemberg in the Derby instead of running second to that horse, the total would have been much larger. Paper Money, who was considered Greenback's best son, won four times as a two-year-old out of eight starts. As a three-year-old he won two races and ran third to Grand Parade and Buchan in the Derby. w*'.., purchase was the . threte-year-old colt Tractor, by The Tetrarch —Gravitation, by St. Simon—Gravity, by Wisdom. Tractor was in training at Newmarket under R. Day, but has no performances to his credit. The ex-New Zealander The Toff won the big event at the Kalgoorlie Easter meeting. There were two falls in the steeplechase at Timaru. Mr J. Daly sustained rather severe injuries to his back when lnnisfallen came down with him in front of the stand, and had to .be removed to the hospital; while A. McMullan hurt His suouiuer througn. laiiii.y yli mart. The question is being generally asked as to how H. Gray will compare with the best horsemen in England, if he does any riding there. Gray should be able to hold his own with anyone in the Old Land. Australian horsemen who hava gone Home have run right to the fore, and no one has ever heard it suggested that Carslake or Bullock were.the equal of Gray in the saddle. Gray stands head and shoulders above every other horseman in this country, impartial Australians have admitted he was superior to their best, and one will -be surprised if his reputation suffers at all through his visit to England.
