A BUILDING SYNDICATE
FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED. SUM OF JEIfICO SAID TO BB INVOLVED. A case having somewhat peculiar turc* was brought up at the Magistrate's Court by C’hiei-Detective Ward yesterday, when a man named Thomas Keen Cockburn appeared in answer to a charge of false pretences. The case, as stated, was that Cock- * burn by falsely representing himself aa being in a business position, had obtained from Edward Ivan Parrington the 6uni of «£l3O, and had made arrangements to the effect that he was ready to offer his services in the building of a house for Parrington between lune 10th and September 10th, this allegedly with intent to defraud.
Chief-Detective Ward stated that the man was concerned *in what proved to be a perfect swindle. The Terabidoc Building Syndicate, which was allegedly a bogus affair and which Detective Torrence had been inquiring into for a month past, had been formed by Cockburns. and the operations of this syndicate had resulted in a lose to eeverml people of a total sum oF JOIOCO, divided between eight unfortunate persons. On the application of Detective Ward n remand was granted until the 23rd Inst. - Bail was fixed at and two sureties of .£IOO each. '
