After Friday's rains the Basin was very sloppy, and at the conclusion of the match there was little green ijJsrass to be seen in those parts of the ground where tho play had been thickest. Porteous, the local goaty, stopped with his hands; but the leather rolled into the net behind him. Within a minute of the kick-off the score was thus opened:—Poverty Bay 1, Wellington 0. Considering the state of tho turf the pace of the game was surprisingly fast. Wellingtkm got away and niade danger around the goal-mouth. Several shots were attempted, but Watson was found a stalwart defender. Campbell made a eood kick, but the ball went loft. After to-and-fro play Wellington was again aggressive, and Brownlee had i an unsuccessful shot. A fine opportunity occurred a minute later, however, of which Ferguson made the best use, sending in .hard. Poverty Bay 1, Wellington 1. Campbell followed this with another attempt, but found the range rather long. Maintaining the offensive. Wellington were soon away 'again. Ferguson got the bali on toe in left field near the goal/ and a shot by Campbell was intercepted. It rebounded to Porter, who shot in behind Watson for the second ;local soal. Wellington 2, Poverty Bay 1. Poverty Bay mado a breakaway once or twice, but never really -threatened the goal. Ballard centred for Wellington, and Porter almost scored by leading in. The visitors made a dash, and Downlie attempted a, long shot, which. Porieous stalled off. Campbell eot a shot. Hut Boots played at off well. Centering again, Poverty Bay was again in danger, and Campbell evaded the goaly. Wellington. 4, Poverty Bay 1. A long kick gave Roots a shot for the visitors, which he took from about thri.Td-way; the ball narrowly missed the net. Wellington, 7; Poverty Bay, 1. The visitors hod hard luck in the ensuing play. Third and Sheiton in turn missing the goal with splendid shots. Third, miskicked in tho very goal-mouth, and just failed to net. The fairly substantial; difference in the scores had now robbed the game of all the keeneea with -which it was characterised at tho commencement, and the locals were inclined to lot slip opportunities to score -which, they might have used to advantage. Ballard got another goal for Wellington. Then the visitors got away nicely, robbing tho Wellington forwards of tie ball at about half-way. Kirkness dribbled it goalwards, closely attended by McKonzio; a corner resulted, and as the leather came in Downio kicked hard and straight and found the inside of the not. Por tho first ten minutes Newtown, through the services of O'tjhoa, Ilylands. and Hoban, tested Dealy, the Thorndon custodian, but on each instance he proved himself to be equal to tho occasion. Eventually O'iluUaron. fullback for Thorndon, relieved by a long kick, which McDpntiell, right wing, accepted, and bringing the ball close to the goal, centred to Ryan, who completely puzzled Wylie (in goal) with his shot. Thorndon, 1; Newitown, 0. Prom a pass on the wing by Knight, E. Murphy dribbled up the field, and sent in a stinging shot, which gave tho "goalie" no chance. Thorndon, Z; Newtown, 0, .... In tho second spell Philpott was obliged to Icavo tho field, owing to injuries. Newtown wore showing to better form in this spell, and after some interesting play Knight came away and Vancv, in attempting to stop lum, slipped, thus giving Ryan the opportunity, and from tho pas* by Knight ho secured his second goal.
