LAST NIGHT’S BOXING

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUSION OF COMPETITION: INTERESTING CONTESTS. The Wellington Boxing Association concluded its provincial amateur championships competition at the town Hall last night. There was a fairly large attendance, including a number of ladies. Unfortunately, the paucity of entries and the fact that even some of those who nominated failed to put in an appearanco for th© preliminary tests on the opening night, the programme was a short one, only four finals for championships being got off. These were won by : D. Kelly, bantamweight. * G. Curran, featherweight. F. Desmond, lightweight. J. Hunter, welterweight. The contests were fought over three rounds of three minutes each. Mr Earl Stewart was referee, and Messrs J• EStaples and P. AV. Woods judges. The boxing was generally good, Carr and Desmond especial!-- gave meritorious exhibitions. To make up for the disappointing dearth of amateur bouts, the committee arranged an exhibition between Eugene Volairc, the well-known French lightweight, and Dick Redwing, a West Coast featherweight. It was Quito the most attractive feature of the evening, the Frenchman giving a brilliant exposition of self-defence in the course of the three two-minute rounds. He also gave it display of shadow-spar-ing Veteran Tim Tracey and B. Daley and McCarthy and B. Coots also indulged in exhibition bouts over three two-minute rounds. , , . Mr L. A. Georges special medal for scientific boxing was awarded to George Curran, the featherweight champion. A BEAL EIGHT. The fight between D. Kelly, Bst OJlb, and A. Tracey, Bst 21b, was a thrill, especially the last round and. a half, when both men threw science to the winds and just stood to one another and fought to a standstill. The onlookers cheered (continuously, ranging lon each man alternately. Tracey had the advantage in height and reach, bnt lacked ihe pugnacity of his’ opponent, who forced the fighting and swung left and right to the face and throat. < Tracey frequently scored with a straight left, but he was outfought at the finish. The verdict to Kelly 'mot with a great reception. CUEEAN THE WINNER. The final between J. H. Carr, Bst 111 b, and G. Curran, Bst 12Jlb, was a really good exhibition, but Curran, who improved greatly on previous displays, carried too many guns for his opponent. Id the opening round ho hooked a weighty left to Carr’s face, and as the latter closed he got a wicked right iipper-cnt home.. Carr not infrequently landed a straight left and scored freely at in-fighting. However, an this department the honours were about even. Curran continued to do tho forcing and piled up a number of points. Over the concluding stages Carr commenced to. makeiup leeway, but he was still behind when the gong went. LIGHT-WEIGHT TITLE. The fight between F. Desmond, Ost 3lb, and P. McGregor, 9st SJlb, needs little or no description, tbey were so unevenly matched Tho former, a tall well-built youth, is a forceful fighter who used a straight left very effectively, and occasionally swung a weighty right which generally reached its (objective. McGregor was very willing, but ho was terribly handicapped on ithe score of size and reach. He was aggressive, and often sent in a solid blow, but the handicap was too much. Desmond, tho winner. EEFEEEB STOPS ‘ BOUT. Tho contest between J. Hunter, JOgt 9lb, and V. B. Poole, 9st lllb, had only been in progress two minutes when tho referee stopped the bout and awarded the decision to Hunter. Neither of the contestants displayed much knowledge of the art; but each indulged in a series of wiki swings. Hunter, who was the taller and possessed the longer reach, landed more often than Poole, and as ho made tb© most of his weight ho quickly had Pool©, who fell no fewer than four times, in a groggy condition. THE AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. ' TEB PBESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND. July 13. The finals of tho Auckland provincial amateur boxing championships concluded to-night, the winners being as follow: —Bantam, K. Conway; feather, G. Otway; light, H. May; welter, J. Graham; middle, L. Cadman (by default); heavy, M. C. McLean.
