UNREST OF TO-DAY

INDUSTRIAL AND SOCIAL REPRESENTATIVE CONFERENCE SUGGESTED. A meeting of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday, tho chairman, Mr A. Leigh Hunt, presiding. The Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce 'wrote stating its intention to ask tho central executive of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce to undertake the organisation of a conference, provided sufficient support for the idea was forthcoming from the different individual chambers, and submitting the following resolution for endorsement: —“That this chamber circularise tbo affiliated Chambers of Commerce with a view to convening a conference of delegates from all Labour, agriculture, commercial, educational, and professional associations and unions in tho Dominion to determine, if possible, the best means of abating the present industrial and social unrest, and promoting the welfare of the whole Dominion. Tho conference to bo drawn from bodies of non-political and non-religious character. The suggested principal lines of action are as follow: —(1) • Increased production on co-operativo lines; (2) fairer division of profits; (3) recognition of merit and ability in preference to aristocracy." wealth, and inherited position.” “BRISTLING WITH DIFFICULTIES.” Mr A. Edwards said that no more vital matter could bo placed before the chamber, but the question_ was bristling with so many difficulties that he did not think any good purpose would be served by giving it consideration. “How can you argue with a man who puts a brick through a plate-glass window simply because he disagrees with the capitalistic system?” he asked. He suggested that the letter should be “received,” and that the chamber should express its sympathy with tho spirit of the first part of the resolution. . , , , The suggestion was adopted.
