SHORTAGE OF CEMENT
ALLEGED WASTE BY DEFENCE DEPARTMENT. The subject of d:he shortage of cement cropped up at tho meeting of tho Hutt County Council _ yesterday, and as a result some caustic comment was made on the methods adopted by tho Defence Department at Trentham. ‘‘During the last_ twelve months,” said Councillor Whiteman, “hundreds and hundreds of tone of cement have been used in Trontbam Gamp, lor laying out tennis courts, and hero we are talking about tho shortage of cement. And they can get it whenever they like.” “Ah, but that’s for tho Government,” said the chairman. There was no further discussion, and tho matter dropped. THE STATEMENT DENIED.
The above remarks of Councillor Whiteman were referred to an officer of tho Defence Department by a “Times” reporter, last" evening. The officer stated that such a state of affairs was ridiculous, and would not bo tolerated by any Government department, in tho face of the present great shortage of cement.
