A DOMINION PROBLEM

NEED FOR IMMIGRATION. The question of immigration is on© which is. in these days, attracting, a very considerable amount ox attention, and reference to- it was made at yesterday's meeting of tho Makara County Council. The matter was brought up by the reading of a communication from the Waipa County Council asking for the Makara Council's support of the following motion: “That this council urges upon tho Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, the urgent need for pushing forward a -vigorous imnugra/liion policy to meet the very pressing need for more workers in the interests of Dominion industries and production.” • The accompanying letter asked that the principles of the motion should bo affirmed in. view of its importance as making for tho progress of public and private works in the Dominion. In the event of approval it was requested that the sympathy of the Patliamentary member for the district should be enlisted, and that similar representations should be made to the Prime Minister.

The chairman. (Mr S. Bryant) agreed that there existedi a great need for immigration, but care should be exercised that right, men were got. Councillor Bowler referred to the shipping difficulty as a hindrance to immigration, and Councillor Windley made mention of the housing problem as another stumbling block. The subject matter of. the Waipa Council's communication having opened up such a big question,’ it wai decided to favourably “receive” the letter.
