THE TRAMWAY SERVICE
There was a more extensive 1 tramway service yesterday, a modification of the ordinary time-table being observed. When interviewed yesterday Mr W. H. Morton (city engineer) said that there were still from 50 to 60 tramway employees absent through the influenza epidemic, but that they were gradually coming back. Yesterday twpp*y employees reported for ■service after being laid up and the department purposes running a modified tram service, which will bo gradually built up, as the men return to the service, until it reaches that which prevailed under normnl conditions. CONVALESCENT HOSPITAL OPENED AT WELLINGTON SOUTH.. Wellington South public school, near the Athletic Park, -»ras opened yesterday as a convalescent hospital for influenza patients. It is admirable for tho purpose, having a good view and ample sunshine. Six wards, with a total of 2i beds, were promptly extemporised from the airy classrooms, and now the hospital is established it will no doubt be filled, as tho patients will not be surrounded with depressing cases, but will have every cheerful inducement to get well. Four patients were admitted yesterday and are doing well. A largo number of patients will como in to-day, and the matron, Mrs MortiniOTo. desires supplies of flowers, fruit, books, and comforts of all kinds, including children's toys. Almost immediately a sittingroom for patients will be established. It only awaits the response of generous people to tho call which Matron Mortimore now makes for a couch, mats, lounge, wicker tehnirs, a jrramopho.no and records, and other thinga conducive to the happiness of patients who have had a very trying experience and aro now getting well. Tho staff comprises Matron Mortimore, three New Zealand Medical Corps orderlies, and fourteen voluntary lady workers, to whom tho matron fenders her grateful thanks for their splendid response, and thoir willing work in getting tho wards into such excellent order as they are at present.
