RED JERSEY APPEAL
NOVEL "DRIVE" ORGANISED. A party of ninety residents of the eastern suburbs, under the leadership 0 £ Mr J. J. Clark, of Evans Bay, with four brass bands, will conduct a raid on Saturday in the interests of the Red Army. Tho technical term for this military manoeuvre is 'a "drive," and the idea is that every house in a selected locality—the name is not to be divulged, but no locality will, : be .too select for the purpose—every house will be visited. The householder, on being summoned by a herald with a fanfare of trumpets—about fifty trumpets—will be asked in fair terms to buy an artillery card, which will be decorated with a Red gun and other symbols. If ho agrees to the proposition all will bo well. , The bands will play a cheery tune and pass on to the next house, after warning the purchaser to exhibit his card prominently as a safeguard against further raids. If ho refuses, the threat held out is that the four bands will all play different tunes at the same time until ho capitulates.
The people of Wades town, with th© assistance of the postmen of th® district, will shortly have the importance of their suburb as a position suitable for a Blue gun impressed upon them. A meeting was held on Monday night, Mr Wiffen, chairman of the school committee, being in the chair, for the purpose of deciding what action this patriotic suburb shall take in the Red and Blue battle. Mr J. H. Helliwell addrsesed the gathering and explained the rules of the game, also warning tjie residents that if they did not "drive" through their own suburb some other gun crews would do it for them. Quite apart from this threat Wadestowu appeared to be keen in the matter, and a further meeting is to he held on Thursday to select a gun position and place a gun there. The moneyshells from Wadestown are expected to arrive at close intervals once the gun cornea into notion. ’
