Mr G. Allport, Secretary to the Marina Department, arrived at Auckland on Monday by the Hinemoa 'from- Welling: ton. Mr Allport is on an official inspection of the northern—lighthouses, and leaves again for the North by the Hinemoa to-morrow. Mr L. O. H. Tripp, Consular agent for Italy, acknowledges receipt of .the sum of il4 15s 3d from the Waikonae Patriotic Society, being the proceeds of a concert given by Roy Scouts and’also £2 2a from Mr D. Luoni. for the Italian Red Cross’Fund. ' A well-known mining , contractor, in the person of Mr Frank Burns, has passed away at Beefton. The deceased was at the head of contractors who drove the tunnel for the Addison’s Gold Mining Company. He was an Australian by. birth, and had resided in Beefton for’ sixteen years. ■Mrs J- Ross, of St. Albans— Christchurch, has received news that Jier son. Private Alex. Gordon Ross, was killed in action on December 16th. He was educated at the Richmond school, and previous to enlisting was in the employ of Messrs D. Benjamin and Co. He was 24 years of age, and left with the 28th Reinforcements.

Mrs Soman, of Sydenham, hag, recejv ed news that her son" Private; Robert Soman, was transferred on January 3rd to the 2nd London General Hospital, suffering from wounds, shell-shock, and bronchitis. Private Soman enlisted at the age of nineteen years, and; left with the 20th Reinforcements, and has beep wounded on two .previous occasions. The transfer is announced of the Rev, J. Richards from the Wellington South Methodist circuit to Dannevrrke, after, the annual conference in Dunedin, next month. At the quarterly meeting of the circuit he was complimented on the good work be had done and the interest he had taken in church matters. Good wishes were also expressed for his future success.

The death occurred at his ..residence, 98, Abel Smith street, o;n Monday last, of Mr Thomas’McGovern. Thexdeccased was a well-known'member of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union and was 55 years old. The funeral took place, yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended by members .of the Waterside Workers’ Union. . s

The Rev. C. Lacroix, Roman .Catholic Chaplain N.Z.E.F., who has been, special. I v mentioned in routine orders "for gallantry in connection with a trim collision in France, is well known-in New Zealand. Coniine originally from France he was first engaged in the Taranaki province and worked among the .Maoris in tho King Country when Taihape and Mangawcka were little more than hush townships. He removed subsequently to the West Coast, which district he left to join the Forces as a chaplain. - Mrs T. Hartess, of Christchurch, who received news that her eon,_ Pirate B. i H. B. Harkess,' who left New Zealand with tho 12th Reinforcements, was reported missing on December sth, has received a later message stating that her son has been killed in action in-Franco. Private Harkliss showed his keenness to "do his bit’’ by enlisting at the age of seventeen years. He was employed, previous to joining his draft, in the. office of the Lyttelton Harbotlr Board, and later by the National Mortgage and Agency Company, at Lyttelton, lie waa very popular in football circles.

The Rev. Henrv Montague Butler. Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, is dead, states a cablegram from Ixjndon. Tho late Dr. Butler, who was over SI years of age. was a son of Ur. George Butier. a former Headmaster of Harrow School. He was educated at Harrow, and at Trinity College. Cambridge, of which he became a Fellow in ISaS. After a distinguished University career and a short experience of political life as private secretary to the Right Hon. W. F. Oowpcr. he was appointed Headmaster of Harrow in 1853, retaining that -position until 1885. when he was appointed Dean of Gloucester- , In. the- following year he was appointed Master of. Trinity College. He was Select Preacher' at Oxford and Cambridge for many years, and he published a number of historical, biographical, aod devotional works.
