N.Z. SOLDIERS IN RAGS!
STATEMENT BY SIR JAMES ALLEN. The Defence Minister was asked some days ago by Mr W. H. Field, M.P. for Otaki, “Whether he is aware that New Zealand soldiers have been over twelve months in the trenches without change of clothing, and that some of them at the time the last mail left were in rags; and whether definite' instructions will he issued that every one of our men shall be supplied with a full outfit of warm clothing before the European winter begins. In a printed reply circulated m Parliament yesterday, Sir James Allen said; "There are very elaborate arrangements at the front to ensure that men have frequent ■ changes and renewals of Nothing. It is quite impossible to arrange for ideal conditions whilst the Division is actually taking its turn in tn© trenches; out as soon as the men come out everything possible is done te ensure their cleanliness and comfort. This winter similar arrangements to those, of last winter will he mad© for the issue of warm clothing.”
