Failure to appear before the Magistrate’s 'Court when ordered to do so ended in a man named William AVaters being arrested on warrant. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, Sub-Inspector Dew informed Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M.. that the defendant was ordered to appear on August 6th to answer a charge of being in arrears with a maintenance order. The case was adjourned on account of his non-attendance till August 10th, and non-compliance with the order necessitated a warrant hemg applied for. Waters was in arrears in respect to a maintenance order to the extent of £6 14s 10d, till January. 1916. Accused, who said he had money coming to him, was sentenced J 'o two months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be_ suspended Until applied for by the police. When charged with being drunk, and that, being an articled seaman on an oversea vessel, he did absent himself from his ship without leave, Peter Chalmers pleaded noi guilty to both offences. The accused strongly maintained that he was not drunk end had only partaken of two drink? during the dav. He loft the vessel on account of the treatment he received from the crew, but bad no intention of de-erting. When brought to the police station he alleged that a constable put his arm round his neck and almost throt'led him. Sergeant AVade, who was in the nolice station when defendant wa<= brought in, said the man was certainly drunk and noisy. He objected to hems searched. A certain amount of force had to be Used, bu* the man was not abused in any way. A fine of £2 was imposed for drunkenness, and accused was ordered to be placed, on board his vessel before it sailed.
