At the Alexandra Hall last night, Mr E. McDonnell delivered an address under the - auspices of the Wellington Social Democratic Party on Henrik Ibsen’s drama, “An Enemy of the People.” Mr M. Ballantyne pre>sided. The lecturer said that Ibsen, smarting under the hostile criticism that was unfairly thrown at his play, “Ghosts,” retaliated by producing “An Enemy of the People,” and that Dr Stockmann (the leading character in the play) to a certain extent typified Ibsen himself. He gave as a reading the scene in act two, where the Mayor of the town threatened the doctor with instant dismissal if he persisted in proclaiming the truth about the water supplying the medical baths; and also a scene from act four, where the meeting denounces the doctor as “An Enemy of the People.” -
