NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By "Tohunga.”) With the approaching Easter Carnival looming in the immediate distance there is a. fair amount of activity at Trcntham.
Mascot and Devotion were worked the wrong way round on Saturday, evidently with a view to the Auckland meeting. They ran a mile in Imm Msec. Devotion being the better of the two. Scadown and Chakwana also ran a mile the reverse way. the former proving the better in the end. Chakwana has dropped out of her Auckland engagements and will probably bo found contesting the Easter Handicap at Tauhcrenikau.
Battlcsong has been given a let UP after his Napier and Masterton efforts, but will bo put to it again this week. Tariugarautu has -gone from Ayres's stable to Mr T. Sevan's farm nt Manakau. The filly has made some progress, and her owner expects to have her ready for a preparation in the spring several Trenthamitos scout that possibility. Mfc. Victoria, who has been turned out, has been recommissioned and is now in the care of Albert Goodman, who will endeavour to fit the Signalman gelding for another race or two. Three of Ayres’s youngsters, Risingham (Rokeby—Eos© Red), Bonnyville (?9 m ‘ form—Carston), and Myra Ivanova (Martian—Ukraine) have been out on tne tracks lately, and all have shaped nicely. Sasanof’s sister has filled out nicely. and makes progress daily. Trickery and Blue Garment ran half a mile in. 51seo. < , Rose Pink, alone, was sent over half a mile, covering the distance in SOseo. Royal Battery and Crescent Moon ran five furlongs in Imin ssec. Blairfinde went along over four furlongs in SOseo. Prince Delaware ran a nice mile in 1 min 13sec. Association, Bonny Maid and Matilda /an half a mile in Slsoc, all moving attractively. Ringform was on the tracks. Ho strode round two circuits, in bandages, at an easy pace. He has a suspicious leg. the trouble being in the pastern, and the bard tracks are not in his favour. Street Singer was out on the inner grass track by herself. Battle Array, has been physicked, and will be spelled. H. Telford has several • youngsters under orders for the first primer. He has had a filly by Bezonian from Strathspey on the tracks, on the lead. C. Pritchard has two well-grown youngsters going through the initial stages of their education. One is a filly by Martian from Mary of Argyle, a sister to Ardenvhor and Mascot, and the other is a £Hv by Rokeby out of Elaine. Bairnsdale struck trouble in the paddock last week. He was running with a pony and got kicked on the near hind leg, and has had to he let up in consequence. The Golfer is making very satisfactory progress, and as soon as the tracks. get a little softer ho will be given a spin. Roumania, who is getting over his soreness, is being given steady work.
When contesting the Hokonux Handicap at Gore on Thursday, Lady Calibre collided with the rails through hanging in' and sustained such injuries as to necessitate her destruction. Her rider. K, C. Reed, an apprentice attached to F. Holmes’s stable, had the misfortune to break a thigh.
