MASTEBTON, March 24. r ‘Do you belong to any particular religious sect?” ashed Mr Poynton at the sitting of the Military hoard yestciday of a religious objector. “Oh no," was the reply. “I’m simply a follower of Jesus.” At Greytown on Wednesday afternoon Miss Zillah Humphries, formerly captain of the famous Kia Tea ladies’ hookey team and the Wairarapa representative eleven for many years, was married to Mr A. Orr. a returned soldier, and son of Mr J. Orr. “How many hours did you say appellant worked?” asked Mr Poynton of a farm manager who was appealing for the exemption of a farm labourer in his employ. “Sixteen hours sometimes” was the reply. “And what wages do you pay him?” asked Mr Poynton. “Thirty shillings a week.” “Thirty shillings a week,” echoed Mr Poynton. “No wonder you do not wish him to go to the war. Thirty shillings a week! I quite agree with you that he is an invaluable man to you in those circumstances.”
The death has occurred at Lyttelton of Mr James Grubb, a brother of Mrs O. O’Connell, formerly of Masterton. Major Osburne-Liliy, ■ formerly of Masterton, has been appointed director , of personal service, Mr Poynton, chairman of the Military Service Board, remarked at the Masterton sitting yesterday that it was as essential that the soldiers of the Army should have food as munitions, and that it was necessary that _ there should be no decrease in those industries which produce food for consumption by our men at the front.
