The ladies of the Newtown-Club have been working lor some weeks past preparing for a patriotic afternoon tea and sale in the club's pavilion on Saturday. March 31st. Teams drawn from members living east and west of Riddiford street will play during the afternoon. Mrs J. P. Luke will open the sale at 2.15. and as the ladies are preparing several interesting competitions, stalls, etc., it is honed that members and friends will attend in full force in order to make the afternoon a big success. The whole of the proceeds will be given to the fund for providing comforts for the boye in the trenches. THOBNDON CLUB. The following Thorndon players are selected to play at Victoria ..on Wednesday in a friendly match:—Murdoch, Hatch, Conlin, Boss (s) : Arden, Gamble, Shalicrass, Dimock (e); Stanford, Longton. Smith. Plummer is). PRESIDENT’S CUP GAMES. On Saturday teams representing Pebone and Hutt Bowling Clubs played the final games for the president’s cup. The fixture is an annual one. and is looked forward to by members of, the clubs conearned as being one of the most social meetings of the season. The competition was inaugurated in 1908 by Dr M. W. Ross and the late Mr Orton Stevens, the then president of the Petone and Hutt clubs respectively, who jointly piesented a cup for competition. The conditions of the games are that the winning club muet win two matches out of three before they are entitled to hold the trophy for the season. Altogether sixteen teams take part, four playing on the homo green and four away from each club. The first match this season was won by Petone, and Hutt was successful in the second. It was fully expected that Saturday’s play would be close, but in the end Petone won in the aggregate, the club having retained possession of the cup since it was presented for competition.
