Sir Edward Grey, replying to AtSazoaoff's congratulations on the naval battle, states; “Knowing that the enemy deliberately concealed his losses, and the severe damage to his ships, and that he was compelled to seek safety in port, leaving us in possession of the scone of action, we feel that the British lives wore not given in vain. 1 rejoice to think that the Fleet has contributed to the success of the Allies’ cause.” HELPING THE WIDOWS AND ORPHANS AN APPEAL FOR FUNDS. Prtu Association DUNEDIN, June 8. The local secretary of the Navy League has received the following cablegram from the general secretary, London:—“Families of sailors lost in the Jutland battle reqtiire financial aid urgently. Any action you take will be deeply appreciated.” The secretary of the local league answered the London cable as follows; —“Otago branch, through High Commissioner, will send £3OOO in a few days.” CHRISTCHURCH, June S. At a meeting of the Navy League last night Mr A. Boyle made a strong appeal to help the dependents of the men lost in the naval battle. A motion was carried;—“That this branch of the Navy League should inaugurate a Dominion fund for the relief of the dependents of the Royal Navy who are lost in the present war, and that various branches in New Zealand and others be asked to co-operate.” AUCKLAND. June 8The Auckland Navy League cabled to London 100 guineas emergency donation for the widows and orphans as the result of the naval battle. The league is arranging a street collection.
