FATAL COLLISION WITH TRAM CAR

VAN DRIVER KILLED IN AUCKLAND. rress Association. AUCKLAND. January 26. A violent collision occurred in Khybor Pass this morning between a van, owned by Messrs R. and W. Heilaby, Ltd., and a tramcar, bound from Onehunga to the city. The driver, Ernest Neal, had the base ot nis skull fractured, and died within an hour at the hospital. Boii!i horses were severaly cut, and one had to be destroyed. Deceased was thirty-two years of age, having a wife and two children. , , ... The van was half-way down the incline when two trams approached from opposite directions. Just as they drew near, the horses attached to the van suddenly swerved across both sets of rails. One tram struck the van, and the other collided with the horses. The driver of the van was thrown heavily, and never recovered consciousness. The motormen did eveiything possible to avoid tihe collision. but the horses had swerved too late. ■
